A dog was found alive after a month buried under the rubble in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, in Marsh Harbour, Bahamas, on Friday. This Hurricane is one of the most intense tropical cyclones to hit the Bahamas.

A month ago Hurricane Dorian destroyed the Bahamas with Category 5 strength. At least 50 people were killed and many more were injured. Rescue workers are still searching to recover the bodies of the dead.

They were flying a drone over the wreckage, with an infrared camera in order to try to identify heat, which is actually a sign of possible life hidden under the debris.

Florida-based shelter Big Dog Ranch Rescue operated the drone when it sensed heat. A volunteer walked slowly for more than half a mile over the rubble. He found a little survivor from the hurricane –  a 1-year-old mixed-breed dog trapped between broken appliances.

“It’s a miracle this little dog had the will to live and to survive in the conditions he was in,” Lauree Simmons, president and founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, said Monday.

The dog was found on Friday in Marsh Harbour, formerly the most densely populated neighborhood on Great Abaco Island. He was flown to the United States since the hurricane with more than 150 other animals.

According to Simmons, the organization finds the pets in the places where their homes once stood. They have managed to reunite some of the animals with their owners, while others are still waiting for new homes.

Rescuers had been looking for specific dogs with known owners when they found the trapped dog. Volunteer Sean Irion sat with him for a few minutes, giving him canned food in order to gain his trust. His ribs showed through his light brown fur since he survived only on rainwater.

“Look at that tail wagging!” Irion said to the dog, according to a video of the rescue. “We’ve got you.”

The rescuers named the dog ‘Miracle’. He was immediately flown to Florida. The dog has wasted away his muscles and he lost 23 pounds. His care includes antibiotics, gradual feeding and physical therapy to help him regain his muscle tone. However, Simmons believes that the dog will make a full recovery.
