A dog from Scarborough became a local celebrity after cleaning over 250,000 pieces of litter on the beach.

Fliss Cater trained her dog, Molly, to search for plastic bottles, ropes, spades, toys, and buckets. When the duo goes on daily walks, they go to the beach and clean up the coastline.

In an interview with Mirror, Cater said that the Labrador doesn’t really know the difference between an empty bottle and a bottle that is still full. She pointed out that this led her to some funny and interesting situations.

Sometimes Molly “steals” bottles from people at the beach. When that happens, Cater always searches for a confused person who is wondering why a dog stole their drink. The dog always tries to do the right thing. Fortunately, nobody gets angry with Molly because of her cuteness.

When Cater moved to the seaside three years ago, she opened a bath and skincare shop. However, she noticed that people leave so much litter on the beach. When she was walking Molly, she was also shocked and appalled by the huge amount of litter she found.

At that moment, she decided to clean the beaches. Cater can fill a wheelie bin every week with the collected litter. Once, her garage was half-filled with beach litter which was supposed to be distributed to local artists for use in their artwork. Cater saves buckets, toys, and spades and lets tourists borrow them in her shop.

Cater also shared her story in the IAMS’ latest campaign which celebrates all pets and the individuality of each animal.

The duo wants to spread the message about beach litter and want to inspire the beachgoers to get involved or at least think twice before they litter.

It’s very important not to litter because once the tides come, the litter is gone and will end up into the sea which will later threaten the marine life.
