A male baboon stole a lion cub at Kruger National Park in South Africa this weekend while he was searching for food. Eventually, the baboon started grooming and caring for the helpless little creature. The tour operator Kurt Schultz of Kurt Safari caught the whole incident on camera.

In the video, the baboon is on a marula tree in dappled light. While the primate is adjusting its position, he reveals the lion cub it’s been holding. The baby lion can be heard crying of distress.

Kurt noticed the baboon’s unusual behavior when he was returning from attending a meeting in the park.

Schultz had a meeting at Skukuza, one of the camps on Saturday, so he decided to visit the Kruger Park. He went there early in the morning to do some photography.

He must have known that there have been cubs present in the region lately. Kurt believes that the baboon troop rested on the rocks during the evening. It seems that the troop came across the hidden cub early the next morning as they were started searching for food.

After the video was shared on Youtube, it has been viewed more than 1 million times. Some people liked it, but others were worried about the lion cub.

Here are some of the comments on social media: “What happened in the end with the cub? I am worried.”
“I hope the cub’s mother will come back for her and also hope the baboon will keep her safe and alive and also hope the mama lion won’t do anything to the baboon awesome sighting.”

It’s normal for baboons to kill a young lion or a leopard, leopard. However, this is the first time in 20 years of guiding, Kurt saw a baboon nurturing and caring for a lion cub.
