There are countless abandoned dogs in rescue shelters and many of them are euthanized if they suffer from serious health problems. Medical treatments are usually very expensive.
However, dogs don’t deserve this horrible fate. All of them deserve to receive proper medical treatment and find forever homes.
Gregory, the 2-year-old Beagle, was nearly euthanized at an animal shelter. He was scheduled to be put down to sleep just because he had health problems.
Gregory was suffering from a heartworm disease, which is usually caused by foot-long worms that live in the lungs, heart, and blood vessels. Fatigue, weight loss, loss of appetite, heart failure are just some of the signs of the heartworm disease.

However, one good man came to his rescue. Joe Kirk arrived just in time. Gregory was so thankful to his rescuer, he even gave him a special hug. Pictures of the adorable dog snuggling up to Kirk quickly went viral and people love them!
Kirk rescued the dog two days before it was scheduled to be euthanized. Kirk and his wife, Schenley, are co-founders of a non-profit animal sanctuary in Maryland. They want to help by finding homes for neglected dogs, providing sanctuary to “unadoptable and senior” dogs, and helping abandoned dogs. Saving dogs from high-kill shelters is the dog sanctuary’s main goal.
The beagle rewarded his rescuer with a heartwarming hug once he realized he was being rescued. Gregory is such a grateful dog. After he was saved, Kirk and his wife provided him the veterinary care and heartworm treatment that he needed.
The couple noted after Gregory received his treatment, a kind family adopted him. Now, the beagle lives a happy life with his new owners.
More than 2.7 million out of 7.6 million animals that enter shelters are euthanized every year just in the U.S. Some of the reasons why animals are put down to sleep are contagious illnesses, aggressive behavior, or overcrowded shelters.
Fortunately, there are everyday heroes like Joe and Schenley who rescue animals no matter their age, health condition, or breed.
