Meet Helen, a blind bison that lives in Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary in Oregon. Sadly, she was living lonely, without any friends until a young calf named Oliver came.

Helen was nervous and afraid to spend the rest of her life sad and alone. The young Jersey calf even broke down the barriers that Helen built around herself. He gained her trust and they immediately became best friends.

The pair became inseparable. It seems that Helen ‘adopted’ Oliver. The young calf’s fur has even changed colors as he grew older and now it matches Helen’s.

It looks like he turned into a baby buffalo, as Lighthouse Sanctuary’s  Gwen Jakubisin said. Helen’s behavior really changed and she seems happier now.

According to Jakubisin, their relationship seems like a nanny who cares for a baby. Although Oliver has a mom named Betsy, she usually leaves him at ‘daycare’ with Helen. They always groom each other, which is great because Helen had the opportunity to express her mother’s instinct.

Thanks to this friendship, Helen came out of her shell. She even gained the confidence to go and befriend other animals who live in the sanctuary, including horses, cows, and sheep.

According to the sanctuary’s website, there are more than 200 animals living there. One of their main goals is to help animal agriculture and lead the way to a more compassionate world.

The sanctuary believes that every animal deserves the right to freedom, including freedom from pain and fear. They are also determined to love and take care of the animals, who have seen the very worst side of humanity. Another goal is to share their stories with people and bring about positive change in the world.

Many people see these animals as food or things. However, the sanctuary wants to create a future for the animals who have the right to life and freedom.

Thanks to the generous environment that Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary has built, an unlikely friendship has flourished. And we are so happy for Ellen, the bison!
