Meet Sheeva, a 2-year-old American Bulldog, who currently serves as a guide dog to a blind puppy named Paddy. They became best friends when 6-month-old Paddy came to the RSPCA Centre in February. Sheeva arrived at the shelter after her owners were evicted from their home last year.

The staff wanted to pair Paddy with an older and wiser dog, so they introduced the puppy with Sheeva. The pair immediately connected. Now, they love to play together in the fields and Sheeva is guiding Paddy around because he can’t see where he’s going.

According to the staff, Paddy may have lost his eyesight as the result of an untreated infection. Although he is completely blind, he’s not experiencing any pain or discomfort.

Meanwhile, Sheeva suffers from entropion, a condition in which the eyelid turns inwards towards the eye. She needs to undergo surgery as she struggles with sight.

Fundraising manager Lauren Moore confirmed that when Sheeva and her owner were evicted, they were walking the streets all night long. Nobody wanted to take in the owner because of Sheeva, so he had to make a tough decision and sign her over to the shelter.

At first, Sheeva was shy, but she managed to come out of her shell. She even has a best friend now – Paddy. She ‘s been amazing with him and loves to help him around. Even though she’s a big dog, she’s gentle and patient with Paddy. It’s as if she’s aware that he needs special care.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, it was forbidden to foster or adopt animals. Luckily, the government gave permission to animal rescue shelters to start fostering and rehoming. Sheeva, who is a friendly and clever girl, needs a new home just like Paddy who needs calm and patient owners who understand his condition.

If you are interested in fostering or adoption, contact the shelter via e-mail enquiries@rspcahalifaxhuddersfieldbradford.org.uk or call 01422 365 628.
