Lately, people’s awareness about adopting animals instead of buying them has been increased. Many people avoid buying animals from stores and breeders because they want to save their future pets from a shelter and provide them with lots of love and care.
There are also people who avoid some animals including disabled and old because they require bigger responsibilities.
However, Nick Abbott, a 31-year-old man from Maine, is not one of those people. He was born deaf and decided to adopt Emerson, a deaf dog. When Emerson was a month and a half old, he was freed from a Florida shelter, thanks to NFR Maine.

Emerson had a tough life. He had seizures after he was found on the streets with his siblings. After he was hospitalized, Emerson contracted a case of parvo, a contagious viral illness. Although it’s a deadly disease, it is also easily preventable.
Lindsay Powers from the NFR Maine said that they discovered that his hearing was impaired after he came back from the vet. However, it remains unknown whether he was born with a disability or he had an accident.
She posted about dogs on social media, hoping that a good family would like to adopt him. It didn’t take long for Abbott to call and ask for the puppy. He told them that he was deaf too, so he believed the two could bond. The adoption procedure was completed in less than 24 hours.
The instantly bonded and Nick’s mother later said that it looked like they were meant to be together. Nick even started teaching Emerson sign language starting with simple commands such as sit, come here, and lie down.
Since the dog came into the house, Abbott has created a joint Instagram account with Emerson where he shares photos of their adventures and updates from their new life together as “two deaf boys and their adventures!”
NFR Maine stated that this heartwarming story encouraged many people to adopt their own animals instead of buying them.
