Animal shelters around the United States are full of animals who need new homes. Approximately 6.5 million pets enter the shelters annually. Animals usually end up in shelters because their owners give them up or animal control finds them on streets. Many stray animals end up on streets because they weren’t kept properly indoors or don’t have a microchip.

Bryan, the blind 5-year-old German Shepherd, was abandoned in a backyard without food and water. When he arrived at an Arizona shelter, he was malnourished and weak.

The Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix held an adoption drive in order to find potential adopters. They had 314 pets, and 313 were adopted, leaving Bryan behind.

The shelter staff was aware that it would be tough to find a home for Bryan, because of his partial blindness. But they were hoping that someone kind enough would come and adopt him.

Each year, over 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized because the shelters are crowded and there aren’t enough adoptive homes. However, every year that number decreases because many animals get adopted and stray animals are successfully returned to their owners.

Adopt, don’t shop!
