Members of the original Ku Klux Klan of the 1860s and 1870s wore masks or hats, and sometimes clothing, but it was the second Ku Klux Klan, which began in 1915, to establish a consistent “look” of hats and slaves.

A Klansmember is still visible today. The image of Klansmann hats has become a popular symbol of hatred in itself, displayed on T-shirts and tattoos by white supremacists around the world.

With most Klan groups, general membership wore white robes. In some cases, Klan officers also wore white robes, but with colored stripes on them to mark a rank.

In other Klan groups, Klan officers were allowed to wear clothing of other colors: black, green, purple, and so on. Which color indicates that a certain rank could vary from one group to another.

Journalist Milwaukee Sentinel has identified the man who shocked neighbors by walking the dog wearing a Ku Klux Klan over the weekend.

50-years-old Charles Michael Booth, of Conover, was contacted by police after several passers-by informed them of the unusual sighting.

They said he walked his dog, drank beer, waved politely at drivers, and did not break any rules. Police also confirmed that Booth was not causing traffic problems.

According to the 2000 census, the city of about 1,200 people was almost 98% white.

A neighbor of Booth’s who did not want to be identified said that was shocked by the incident and that Booth had a “mixed-race” family.

“We froze,” she said. “We knew what we were seeing, but we didn’t know why.”

NAACP President Gregory Jones reportedly called Booth’s fashion choice a terrorist act that sought to intimidate locals.

Conover is just over 200 miles from Minneapolis, where the murder of George George Floyd sparked protests that continue nationwide.
