Pirate Cat, the local celebrity known for roaming the Monon Trail, has passed away. He had to be put down to sleep after he returned from a mysterious disappearance this weekend.
Amanda Cancilla, a local tattoo artist, was Pirate Cat’s owner. She stated that he was put down late Monday afternoon, because of his poor health. Last summer, the popular fluffy white-and-orange cat was diagnosed with kidney disease.
His owners mourned the death of the legend. In a lengthy post on Facebook, they explained what happened and thanked the community for taking care of him. Although they will probably never have another famous pet, they are fine with that. They are so satisfied because Pirate Cat touched so many lives.

The cat went missing on Saturday. So, a “missing” poster was posted on Pirate Cat’s Facebook page, offering a reward for those who have any kind of information about his whereabouts.
Finally, someone found Pirate Cat and called after seeing the missing poster. The cat has been wandering farther north than his usual territory.
The cat was in a critical condition, so Amanda immediately took him to the vet. It was clear that he wouldn’t make it, so she decided to put him to sleep on Monday morning. This had to be the toughest decision for her.
The cat has been so popular and beloved in the community. He has over 6,000 followers on Facebook and his own clothing line.
Now that the Pirate Cat is gone, few people called for a statue in order to honor him. With the coronavirus spreading around the world, the memorial service for him will be postponed. His ashes will be spread near the 96th Street stop on the Monon.
Even though the Pirate Cat died, Amanda is still looking for answers about his mysterious disappearance. If you have information about his whereabouts, contact his owners through the Pirate Cat Facebook page.
