Your pets could be in danger because the mating season for coyotes has begun.
Coyotes are usually nocturnal animals and people don’t see them during the day. However, recently that has changed.
Coyotes can be found in all states, except Hawaii. They don’t usually attack humans, but they may attack your pets during the mating season.
Although the mating season for coyotes starts in late December, the peak breeding time is from February until March.
The mating season has already started, so the Humane Society of Granville County released a warning statement to pet owners. In the statement, they warned pet owners to don’t leave your dogs out alone and don’t allow your outdoor cats to wander around. The society also stated that coyotes might show up in suburban and urban areas, not just in rural areas.

Male coyotes are usually more aggressive during mating season, which means they pose a risk to your pets, including small and large dogs.
The society recommends to spay or neuter your pets because coyotes are attracted to unspayed or unneutered domestic dogs. Unspayed female dogs may attract male coyotes. Also, female coyote’s scent can lure in male dogs, who can be killed by male coyotes.
Coyotes are actually very intelligent animals that watch and can learn routines. So, you may want to change your schedule a little bit, walk your dog on a leash, and keep a close eye on your pet at all times.
Although most coyotes will avoid humans, others that are hungry will take the chance of jumping over fences to attack small animals. Officials warn pet owners to keep their pets inside. Pets shouldn’t be outside, even if they are kept in a fenced yard.
To keep your animals safe, don’t leave your dogs outside unsupervised and secure food sources. Store garbage in wildlife-proof containers and feed your pets inside.
