Dog racing is just as bad as dogfighting. During racing, dogs can hurt themselves and experience bad injuries like broken legs, cardiac arrest od spinal cord analysis. Many animal lovers are not fans of any sport that includes dogs and are working hard to ban dog racing.

In 2018, voters voted against dog racing in Florida. Officials gave kennels and tracks promoting the abusive sport to close them by the end of 2020. Thanks to the spread of Covid-19, coronavirus has stamped out this abusive sport by closing Florida’s dog racing tracks months ahead of schedule.

Although this may seem like good news, it’s also bad news because it left around 1,500 greyhounds homeless. Currently, all animal shelters in the U.S. are overcrowded with animals as coronavirus is spreading across the country.

Carolee Ellison is the lead trainer at Awesome Greyhound Adoptions, Inc, a non-profit organization that finds homes for retired greyhounds. She stated they need more time in order to find a place for the dogs. Now, they must act facts because over 1,500 dogs don’t have a place to go.

Unlike chihuahuas or French bulldogs, greyhounds are high maintenance dogs. This is the reason why Awesome Greyhound Adoptions does home inspections before people can adopt this high energy breed.

They need to be walked out at least three times a day and they have to drink fresh water a few times a day. When it comes to feeding, they need to eat twice a day.  It costs around $500 to care for one greyhound. On the bright side, greyhounds don’t shed much.

The non-profit organization is now looking for foster parents who can help the homeless animals or even adopted them. They need kind people who live in the area from Vero Beach to Fort Lauderdale since they require home visits.

If you want to help, please contact Awesome Greyhound Adoptions as soon as possible.
