As a flight cargo was emptied in Toronto, Canada, 38 puppies were found dead from apparent suffocation.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) released a statement in which they confirmed Ukraine Airlines flight PS 1241 landed at Pearson International Airport on June 13. The plane was carrying 500 puppies that were supposed to be sold in the Toronto area.

A source remembered seeing the 500 puppies in Ukraine, 200 French bulldogs included. The puppies were put in cages on the flight from Borispol to Toronto.

According to eyewitnesses, the temperature was over 30C when the puppies were loaded on the plane and it was obvious that they were suffering. Some of the puppies were placed on top of each other and couldn’t even move while others were put in plastic.

The puppy cages were put on pallets and then transported into the lower compartment of the airplane where air circulates poorly.

A baggage handler took a video when the carts were loaded with live animals. This incident directly violates the International Air Transport Association guidelines which state that all animals should have space to turn when they are standing and can sit or lie in their natural positions.

Abby Lorenzen, a resident from Toronto, went to the airport to pick up her friend’s cat. However, CFIA officers told her that there was a delay because of the numerous animals boarded on the flight. She said that according to their faces, this situation didn’t happen very often. They also didn’t allow her to enter the warehouse to find the cat.

Lorenzen has previously picked up pets from the company. However, this was the first time that she wasn’t allowed to go into the warehouse. When they gave her the cat, she went home. She had to go back to the cargo warehouse on Monday morning and bring the cat for her last flight to the west coast. This time, she had access to the warehouse.

When Lorenzen entered the warehouse, she said it smelled like death. She left the cat there and passed by a garbage can and she was shocked to see the bodies of several puppies. She took a picture and asked an officer about the situation who told her that he was instructed to get rid of the bodies.

April Byers of Hanover, Ont., called the CFIA vet line on Sunday in order to finalize the paperwork. She said that the vet knew about the situation and told her someone wrapped a few crates that contained animals and suffocated them.
An investigation has been launched and the organization is responsible to regulate the transportation of the animals. The
Ukraine International Airlines hasn’t commented yet. However, there is a temporary embargo for the transportation of live animals on aircrafts B767 until this case is solved.
