There are over 48 million people living with disabilities in the United States. There is a nonprofit organization Canine Companions for Independence decided to pair trained Golden retrievers, Labradors or mixed dogs with these people.

The organization is doing a very important job. Unfortunately, there are travel restrictions because of the pandemic, so the charity has a hard time booking the commercial flights they usually use to transport their dogs across the country.

When three pilots from the Sonoma Jet Center in California decided to volunteer and help the nonprofit organization by flying the trained service dogs. Martyn Lewis, Josh Hochberg, and Jeff Stewart managed to transport the charity’s puppies to Texas, Oregon, Idaho, Southern California, Washington, and Montana. All of them are based out of the Sonoma Jet Center.

Hochberg is also the owner of the center. He admitted that it was his first time ever flying with puppies. He noted that the puppies require less attention than his daughters, who often accompany him during his flights.

While transporting the puppies, Hochberg decided to get his own puppy, an American Brittany named Charlie. As it turned out, he was really satisfied with his work which inspired him to get a pup of his own.

The nonprofit organization is very thankful for the pilot’s assistance who volunteered their time and resources.

All the puppies are from the Canine Companion’s headquarters in Santa Rosa, California. When they are old enough, they get the opportunity to live in homes with volunteers in order to be socialized and trained. They even learn over 30 different commands. When they are a year and a half old, they are ready to train at professional training centers and learn more advanced commands.

The Canine Companions for Independence is doing an important job, so they are relying on private pilots during this difficult time. Their next goal is to find pilots with bigger planes who will help them fly to the east coast.
