The police department from Georgia received some extra help while patrolling this Thursday from furry companions.

The Tybee Island Police Department decided to help shelter dogs just like Riley to get adopted. So, they got a chance to go outside and be dogs.

The K-9 for a Day program started on Thursday. Riley was the first dog to kick it all off. This is the first time that the Police Department took shelter dogs out in order to find them forever homes.

Emory Randolph with TIPD said they went out on Tybrisa Street which is one of the most popular areas on the island. He also announced they were doing a foot patrol because they wanted to meet and greet the public.

They joined their forces with the Humane Society of Greater Savannah when a lot of dogs were not getting adopted. However, it’s remarkable to see the dogs get more socialized while out for the day.

The K-9 unit does a lot more work than solving crimes. The community really loves the dogs and respects their work.

Now, the main goal is to exercise them, socialize them and even help them get adopted.

According to the Tybee Police, this is beneficial for both officers and shelter animals. Officers get to spend time doing something fun while at work, and animals get to find their forever homes.

Every other Thursday, dogs like Riley will get to ride in a police car.
