The New York Police Department is investigating the incident of cats trapped in sealed buckets abandoned outside an animal shelter in Lower Manhattan. This is a brutal crime because the cats were guaranteed a cruel death.

After the cats were rescued, a nonprofit animal shelter took care of them. According to the shelter named Animal Haven, there was no way that the abandoned cats could have escaped.

Tiffany Lacey, the executive director of the shelter, said: “They were left to go out with the trash and were only found because they seemed suspicious.”The cats were named Charlie and Sage.

Thankfully, one person noticed Sage peeking out from inside a bucket in the trash. Instead of being thrown in the trash compactor, he was rescued and taken to Animal Haven. The next month, another cat was found in a bucket. Although the cat was alive, he was in very bad shape.

According to Lacey, a security camera may have captured footage of the same man dropping off each of the buckets nearby. It remains unknown whether the suspect wanted the cats to be found and rescued. Lacey also pointed out that the suspect leaves the cats in places that would be hard to find.

After Sage received treatment from the veterinarians at Animal Haven, he fully recovered. Although he survived with minor skin wounds, it may take a little more work until Charlie recovers. There may be also other cats sealed in buckets.

The employees at Animal Haven and animal lovers everywhere are hoping that this is the end of this evil trend. The police are still searching for suspects.

Anyone who owns a pet and fears that he or she can’t take care of the animal, should not abandon the pet. There are other humane options. For example, animal shelters accept unwanted pets. They also provide the possibility that the animals can still find a forever home.

“If we can’t help directly, we have resources and other locations to safely surrender pets,” Tracey said. If you can’t take care of your pet anymore, you may leave it in an animal shelter, instead of abandoning it.
