Although there are many no-kill shelters across the country, there are still places where animals are euthanized if nobody adopts them.
There was one animal shelter located in Taft, Texas where the kill rate was very high. Almost 100% of the animals living at the shelter had to be euthanized. However, that percent was quickly reduced when a kind and a compassionate woman took over the shelter.
Kayla Denney is an animal lover who decided to quit her job and rescue the animals who needed to be saved. She took over the shelter which was in a bad condition and needed a makeover. The electricity wasn’t even properly working.
The shelter didn’t have enough money to perform all the repairs or properly take care of the animals. As a result, every Wednesday was a “kill day”.
When Kayla found out that many animals didn’t even have a chance to find a home, she was completely heartbroken. So, she decided to turn this place in a no-kill shelter.

First, she asked her family, close friends, and colleagues for supplies to spare and donations. In a Facebook post that she wrote, many people decided to help her. She managed to gather over 800 boxes with handy supplies, such as pet beds, toys, food, and constructional materials.
Many people also volunteered to help Kayla transform the animal shelter or just take care of the animals. She also contacted fostering and animal organizations in the area and asked for help to find proper homes for all of these animals a warm home.
Even though it took a long time to transform the shelter, Kayla’s efforts paid off. First, she managed to fix the electricity and even reduced the 100% kill rate to zero. Now, the shelter has a 100% save rate.
Kayla’s actions were noticed by many people. She received an award from the Petco Foundation and is the official holder of the 2019’s National Unsung Hero Award. She also won $35,000. Instead of keeping the money, she decided to invest it in the shelter.
