Numerous people around the world have pets, but not all of them know how to properly take care of the animals. Recently, a tiny baby chimp was found kept in a cardboard box in a supply shop in Kakata, Liberia.
Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue And Protection received an anonymous tip about the baby chimp. When they raided the supply shop, the poor baby was really stressed and clinging to an old piece of cloth for comfort.
It must have been a really heartbreaking sight. The rescue found out that the chimp was living in this box for several months. According to the founder of LCRP, Jenny Desmond, the chimp’s mother was killed off and sold on the black market for bushmeat.

The baby chimp was named Chance. She was only 1 year old and nobody has properly taken care of her. Her owners didn’t really care for Chance, so they left her in a box in the corner of the shop.
The baby chimp was really stressed and lacked nurturing and attention. This lifestyle had taken obvious tolls on Chance. She was traumatized and just stared at nothing in particular.
The owners fed Chance just with cornmeal and rice and cornmeal, which led to malnourishment. She was underdeveloped for her age and her owners didn’t seem to care. Fortunately, rescuers took Chance from the negligent owners and gave her a cozy blanket.
As soon as she was transported to the LCRP rehabilitation center, the staff immediately saw that her behavior changed. She wasn’t dependant on her blanket and she stopped rocking back and forth. Chance got strong enough to stand up and wanted to be held.
Soon, she was smiling and her progress grew rapidly. The staff really took care of her.
Although it would be great for Chance to return to the wild, that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Her rescuers still need to take care of her. She may end up living in a forest environment with other chimpanzees for the rest of her life. Although she had a sad start to life, her future is brighter!
