Our planet is not a home just for humans. In fact, humans make only 0.01% of Earth’s life. This planet is also home to astonishing wildlife. Sadly, many animals are often abused by humans.

Some of these amazing creatures are elephants. Back in 2016, one elephant who has been nicknamed Pretty Boy was walking around with a gunshot wound on his forehead for several weeks. The incident happened in Zimbabwe.

When the elephant was shot, he was 25 years old. The creature didn’t know what to do, so he decided to ask humans for help.

When the vets from Animal and Wildlife Area Research and Rehabilitation Trust (AWARE) heard about the elephant’s injury, they immediately arrived at Mana Pools National Park.

Although elephants usually want to stay away from everyone when they are injured, this elephant surprised them when he approached the humans first. After veterinarians Dr. Lisa Marabini and Dr. Keith Dutlow arrived at the scene, the injured elephant went straight up to their car.

When the vets were checking his injury, the elephant was very relaxed and gentle. He didn’t show any signs of aggression. The vets found the deformed bullet inside his head which caused a depression fracture of the bones in his sinuses.

According to Dr. Marabini, bullets are usually sterile when they pass through the tissue because they are so hot. However, Pretty Boy’s wound was very infected, so the vets had to remove the dead pieces of the bone so that the body could properly heal the infection.

She thinks that whoever shot the elephant was actually aiming for his heart, but missed. It’s unknown whether it was a poacher or a hunter.

While the vets were removing the bullet, they saw something grey coming out of the wound. After removing the bullet, they cleaned the wound and gave the elephant some antibiotics and parasiticides.

Pretty boy than laid his head against a tree and took a nap. Fortunately, the next day, the elephant was feeling so much happier and relaxed, all thanks to the vets.

Even though he still needs some time to heal, he was lucky to be alive!
