Recently, pictures of starving lions at a park in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital were shared online. Social media users were outraged and launched an online campaign to rescue five malnourished and sick  African lions. According to some people, one of the lions died on Monday due to sickness. Reportedly, the lions live in cages at Khartoum’s Al-Qureshi Park, where they didn’t receive any food and medicine for a few weeks.

Osman Salih, a Sudanese citizen, went to the park and saw that the lions are really living in such horrible conditions. Then, he decided to start an online campaign with the hashtag #SudanAnimalRescue. The goal of this campaign is to spread awareness about what was going on and find help to save the animals.

In a Facebook post, he wrote that after the wildfires killed so many animals in Australia, it’s really devastating to see the lions caged and not treated properly. He even shared the shocking images of the lions with their ribs and bones showing. Also, he pointed out that the problem is not just the food. The lions also need special treatment to get rid of infections and other health issues.

Thank you all for the support and for the interaction on this very important topic. After seeing the fires in Australia…

Since food grew more scarce because of the ongoing economic crisis in Sudan right now, the park officials and local veterinarians said that the condition of the lions has worsened in the past few weeks. Essamelddine Hajjar, a manager at the park, said that food isn’t always available. Now, the staff buys it from their own money to feed the lions. Although the Khartoum government manages the park, it’s mostly funded by private donors.

Salih confirmed that one lioness died from illness and another one had to be transported to a clinic to receive medical treatment. He recently partnered with FOUR PAWS International, a global animal welfare organization. The organization plans to rescue and rehabilitate the animals, not just at Qureshi zoo but in other Sudanese parks in Sudan as well.

Salih also said that whoever wants to buy food for the lions, can bring it in person. Sometimes, these kinds of situations are exploited, therefore, the donations don’t end up in the right place.
