We’ve all heard about the annual Yuling Dog Meat Festival that takes place in China. The festival will start on June 21st.

However, many activists, celebrities, and dog lovers around the world have already condemned this event that results in the cruel slaughter of several thousand dogs each year. However, the festival still continues.

The festival started 10 years ago. Since then, many dogs have died and been subjected to horrific conditions. Fortunately, many people are attempting to save other dogs from suffering the same fate. Although there is progress, it will take more time to put this suffering behind us.

The event is also known as Lychee And Dog Meat Festival and it’s held in Yulin every year in the summer solstice days. Around 10,000 dogs are eaten this year. Before they are consumed, they are kept in cruel conditions and are beaten to death.

Before, the dog meat festival was affiliated with the Yulin government, but that’s not the case anymore. It’s not even a “traditional” Chinese event. The festival started in 2010 so dog traders can boost sales and also attract tourists. Before the festival, Yulin didn’t have any history of dog slaughter and consumption.

Although Asian people eat dogs, most Chinese don’t eat them. They think that eating them damages China’s reputation and condemn the dog meat festival.

Animals Asia, a charity that wants to end animal cruelty, was investigating the dog meat industry in China for 4 years. They didn’t find any evidence of any large breeding facilities in the country which means that the dog meat comes actually from stolen family dogs and strays. According to reports, festival-goers said that they have seen dogs with collars on.

Some of the dog meat farms even registered under several different names in order to hide the widespread family pet thefts.
