A pregnant elephant died in India after eating a pineapple filled with fireworks. As soon as she took a bite of the fruit, the explosives went off in her mouth and severely damaged her jaw.

A spokesperson from the Kerala Forest Department said that farmers from the area are known to put firecrackers inside food and leave it on the edges of their fields in order to keep away wild animals.

Forest officer Mohan Krishnan was a part of the team who tried to save the pregnant elephant. The incident went viral after he decided to share the story on Facebook. He wrote that the elephant trusted everyone. So, she must have been shocked after the pineapple she ate exploded. It’s sad that even her child that she was going to give birth to in 18 to 20 months died in the incident.

According to officials, the wild elephant walked out of the Silent Valley National Park (SVNP) in order to search for food. She went to the Malappuram District, where she ate the fruit stuffed with fireworks.

Animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi noted the Malapurram District is the most dangerous and violent place for animals in the entire county.

People who live in the area once threw poison on roads that killed around 400 birds and dogs. Unfortunately, an elephant is killed every 3 days in Kerala.

When the elephant took a bite of the pineapple, she injured her tongue and mouth so badly that she couldn’t eat. Krishnan added that this elephant didn’t harm anyone even when she was running in pain in the village.

The elephant went to the Velliyar River and she got her head partially underwater. Sadly, when she was found she couldn’t move at all and she died while standing in the water.

Officials decided to cremate her and take her back to the forest. It’s still unknown where the poor animal got hurt. Two organizations are offering rewards for anyone who has useful information that will lead to an arrest.

In the meantime, social media users decided to pay tribute to the poor elephant and share some of the artworks they made.
